Psychosis Risk Brain Wave Study

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY?

To see whether being at elevated risk of developing a psychotic illness is associated with any discernable deficits in cognition or changes in brain wave measurements (AKA electroencephalogram or EEG).

WHO IS NEEDED?

People between the ages of 18-25 years old who have a parent or sibling who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IF I PARTICIPATE?

Duration: Estimated amount of time for interviews, questionnaires, and cognitive testing/brain wave recording is a total of 4-6 hours.

Tests/Procedures: Completing some questionnaires, clinical interviews, a few computer-based cognitive tasks/games, and a brain wave recording (EEG).

Risks: There are no known risks to subjects receiving EEG recordings who meet our inclusion and exclusion criteria. There are no known risks to subjects completing cognitive tasks on the computer. Some of the questions in the interview and questionnaire portion are sensitive and could make someone uncomfortable.

Benefits: There are no medical or financial benefits for taking part in the study.

Compensation: Participants are compensated $50 for the questionnaire and interview portion and $125 for the cognitive testing EEG recording portion of the session.

WHERE WILL THE STUDY TAKE PLACE?

Washington University School of Medicine.
